BIO
Leigh grew up in Groton and attended the visual arts program at Berkshire Community College for a year before abandoning her vague plan to work in commercial art. Instead, soon afterwards, she moved with her husband to an unrestored 18th c. house in central New Hampshire where, along with raising two children and lugging a lot of firewood, she painstakingly taught herself broad-pen lettering and traditional gilding, and began the lifelong process of developing a painting style.  Her subsequent career as a calligrapher and illuminator focused on the interplay between text and image, one discipline enhancing and balancing the other.

The small, precisely-detailed watercolors she’s currently producing are the offshoot of that long career. The decision to test the strength of her watercolor images without the accompanying text has been recent, gradual, and is still being explored with a little bit of surprise and a great deal of pleasure.

Leigh’s award-winning work has been exhibited throughout New England and has been juried for inclusion in both the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and the New Hampshire Art Association.

The inspiration for my work has always been this place where I live. After a lifetime in New England, I still can’t get enough of its particular beauty. The attempt to capture and convey, in watercolor, what I love about it - whether it be the landscape, the early architecture, or any element or detail of either - is endlessly captivating, often wildly challenging, and always joyful. I work from photographs, because I paint slowly. I work small because I love the intimacy of miniature painting - and the potential for it to have a surprisingly large impact.
