BIO
Hilary Hanson Bruel is a mixed-media artist who works with encaustic paint — a mixture of beeswax, damar resin, and pigment that is applied in layers and fused with heat. She grew up in the suburbs of Boston and attended Harvard University where she majored in Visual and Environmental Studies, taking courses in sculpture, design, and photography while completing a painting thesis. Upon graduation Hilary embarked on a career in graphic design, and only returned to painting in 2013 when she enrolled in an encaustic painting class. She immediately fell in love with the medium, which combines elements of painting, sculpture and collage, and began exhibiting her work in 2019.
“My paintings are pure explorations of texture, color, and composition — the natural evolution of my years as a designer. By working in horizontal and vertical bands, I am able to focus on relationships between the colors, textures, and materials in my work.”
