BIO

Growing up primarily in the foothills of Pikes Peak, Laura took drawing lessons from an artist neighbor who introduced her to 'lost & found' lines and how to vary line-weight. In high school her art teacher taught her the basics of batik and ever since then she has cultivated her art practice and still has a growing expertise and love for this medium. Along the way Laura worked in the software industry. Now that she is retired she has more time for art making, and has shown her work in various venues regionally. She enjoys introducing others to batik and has had the opportunity to give various classes and demos locally. Laura also enjoys drawing and painting in oil and watercolor..

I like the challenge of trying new techniques and materials as I look for ways to show color, energy, and form in my work. Fond memories of my father’s beekeeping are the inspiration behind some of my pieces. I like to take ordinary objects and capture them in unique colors. I’m also inspired by the dynamic beauty of creation, whether it be through observing nature or humanity. I like the serendipity in the process of my art making. Even after more than forty years of experience there are still plenty of surprises in the art of batik!
